A Taste of Paris in the Heart of Holetown – Our Visit to Derrière French Brasserie

This past Saturday evening, Lisa and I discovered a restaurant gem tucked away in the most unexpected corner of Holetown – Derrière French Brasserie.

Newly opened in Limegrove, this surprising little spot is a fresh addition to the West Coast dining scene and one I suspect will be making quite a name for itself. Nestled discreetly next to Café de Paris and not far from Clifton Market, it’s easy to overlook at first glance – but oh, what a find.

From the moment we stepped inside, we were transported. The welcome was warm and super-friendly, with a lovely team that made us feel at home from the get-go. We began our evening at the bar, which is, quite honestly, a destination in itself. It’s a beautifully designed space – attractive, well-lit, with an easy elegance. We lingered over a couple of expertly crafted cocktails, soaking up the atmosphere before being shown to our table.

A French restaurant in the heart of Barbados

The dining area is straight out of a Parisian brasserie – bench-style seating mixed with classic bistro chairs, French music lilting in the background, and that unmistakable buzz of a popular eatery alive with conversation. The kitchen is open to the restaurant, giving guests a glimpse of the culinary action. We watched as the chefs plated each dish with meticulous attention, every plate inspected personally at the pass – a reassuring touch of professionalism.

Attention to detail at the pass

Jules Gualdoni – Papa Jules, of La Cabane fame – was a constant presence throughout the evening, chatting with diners, making sure every guest was being looked after. It’s this personal, caring touch that really sets Derrière apart. You can feel his passion in every detail and the staff, though not French(!), have clearly embraced the concept.

Table service

The menu is unapologetically French and authentically executed. Lisa began with a rich and deeply flavourful French Onion Soup, while I had the Fricassé de Escargot – rich, creamy and perfectly cooked. For mains, Lisa enjoyed a traditional Confit de Canard, meltingly tender with wonderfully crisp skin. I was intrigued by the Bajan Cassoulet, a local twist on a French classic, and it did not disappoint – robust, hearty, and packed with flavour. We finished by sharing a splendid Tarte Tatin, golden and sticky, the apples just on the right side of caramelised.

Confit de Canard

There’s a great selection of French wines, thoughtfully chosen to complement the menu, and I rounded off the meal with a Clifton Hall 12-Year Old Rum from Foursquare Distillery – a real treat and a nod to Barbados’ own fine traditions. Prices are reasonable given the quality, making it one of the better-value fine dining experiences we’ve had in recent months.

Mark & Lisa at Derrière French Brasserie

Derrière is certainly not your typical Bajan restaurant – and that’s what makes it so exciting. When you’re ready for a break from grilled mahi mahi and flying fish, this brasserie offers a slice of Parisian charm right here on the Platinum Coast. They also serve breakfast and lunch – Lisa has her eye on a Croque Monsieur already – so we’ll certainly be back to explore more of the menu.

It’s busy, it’s noisy, and it’s brilliant – in that perfect, energetic, authentically French way. A hidden treasure in Limegrove, and in my view, a must-visit for anyone staying nearby.
