There are a few things we’d recommend to every guest visiting Barbados, and a catamaran cruise is firmly on that list. Whether you’re swimming with turtles, sailing past some of the island’s most beautiful beaches, or watching the sun dip behind the sea with a rum punch in hand, it’s one of those experiences that feels effortlessly special.
We’ve been on quite a few ourselves over the years with family, colleagues, and friends, and each time feels a little different. So, we’ve put together everything you might want to know when planning a catamaran cruise in Barbados, from choosing the right boat to what to bring with you on the day.
Why take a catamaran cruise in Barbados?
Simply put - because there’s no better way to see the west coast. The water is calm, clear and brilliantly blue, and the perspective from the boat gives you views you just don’t get from land, especially of the stunning villas that line the coastline. You’ll stop to snorkel (usually with turtles or over a shipwreck), relax with a drink, enjoy freshly prepared food, and drop anchor in quiet bays for a swim. It’s relaxed, luxurious, and a real highlight of any trip.
Should I book a private or shared cruise?
It really depends on the kind of experience you’re looking for.
We often recommend private charters for families, groups or special celebrations. You’ll have the boat entirely to yourselves, which means more space, more flexibility, and an itinerary that suits you. If you’d like to start later in the day, focus on snorkelling, or stop off at Sea Shed for a drink after, the crew can build that into your plan.
Shared cruises, on the other hand, are a great option for couples or smaller groups looking for a more budget-friendly experience without compromising on quality. These charters vary in size, but we particularly recommend the Silver Moon vessels, which welcome no more than 12 guests, keeping the experience personal and friendly.
What’s included on board?
Many catamaran experiences include:
- Towels provided on some charters
- Snorkelling gear (masks, snorkels, life jackets)
- Floatation noodles
- Drinks (from local beer to fresh cocktails)
- A freshly prepared lunch or light bites
- Great music, space to lounge, and a brilliant crew.
In our experience, the crews are excellent. They’ll check dietary preferences ahead of time, top up your drinks without being asked, and really tailor the experience to suit your group. On private charters, you can also request extras like jet skis, water sports, or specific stop-offs.
How long is a typical cruise?
Private charters usually start from around 4 hours, and you can often choose your own timings. Some of our guests like a morning sail with lunch on board; others prefer a late afternoon cruise with sundowners and sunset views. Shared cruises are generally half-day or full-day, depending on the provider. If you’re booking during peak season, it’s best to reserve early as the best boats go fast.
When is the best time of day to go?
That’s down to personal preference. Mornings are usually calmest for snorkelling, and the light is lovely and soft. Midday cruises are perfect for a sun-drenched lunch and swimming in the warmest part of the day. But honestly, we have a soft spot for the late afternoon into evening. Nothing beats a golden-hour swim followed by sunset at sea.
What should I bring?
Not much! Most of the boats provide everything you need. We recommend:
- Some charters provide towels, but not all do, so it’s worth packing your own just in case
- Swimwear and a light cover-up
- Non-oil based, reef-safe sunscreen (put it on before boarding)
- Sunglasses and a hat
- A waterproof pouch or dry bag for your phone/ camera
- A bit of cash for tipping the crew.
If you’re prone to seasickness, it’s worth taking something beforehand. The west coast is generally calm, but better safe than sorry.
Which catamaran companies do you recommend?
We’ve tried several over the years and are always happy to share our personal recommendations:
Seaduced is our go-to for private charters. Their boats are beautifully kept, the team is fantastic (we’re big fans of Nichola and Chris in the bookings office), and they really go the extra mile to create a luxury experience. Their newest boat, Seaduced III, is spacious, stylish and great for groups up to 20.
Silver Moon is a brilliant choice for both shared and private cruises, offering excellent food and a relaxed yet high-quality vibe. It’s the most popular option with our clients, and we consistently find their service to be exceptional; polished, friendly, and reliably top-tier. It’s ideal if you’re looking for something intimate without compromising on comfort.
Calabaza has a friendly, laid-back feel with excellent reviews and includes return taxi transport for guests staying between Oistins and Speightstown, which is ideal if you don’t want to think about driving.
Cat & The Fiddle is a more casual option that still offers a great experience, especially for families or larger groups looking for a private cruise with more of a local feel.
When should I book?
If you’re visiting during Christmas, February half-term, Easter, or other peak times on the island, we strongly recommend booking as early as possible, particularly for private charters or larger groups. If you’re not sure what might suit you best, we’re always happy to talk through the options.
