Tucked away on the sands of Batts Rock Beach, La Cabane is one of those rare places that manages to feel both effortlessly cool and utterly uncontrived.
It’s the sort of spot you hear about through a whisper from a friend or a recommendation from our concierge team – not plastered across billboards or swarming with cruise-ship crowds. And thank goodness for that.
The approach down to the beach is wonderfully unassuming – a winding hill that suddenly opens up to the sea, with a simple car park the only hint that something special lies just beyond. Step through the wooden arches and you’re greeted not by hostess stands or piped music, but by a sign cheekily asking you to leave your phones at home. Of course, there’s free Wi-Fi – even barefoot luxury understands Instagram – but it sets the tone: this is a place to unplug, unwind, and dig your toes into the sand.
La Cabane is the brainchild of Jules Gualdoni – yes, Papa Jules again – and it’s here that his particular brand of laid-back, low-key brilliance first took root. Where Derrière is precise and polished, La Cabane is all charm and Bajan character. There are swings hanging from the trees, hand-painted wooden signs with playful messages, and that unmistakable feeling that you’ve stumbled into somewhere very special.
The food? Unfussy, seasonal, and very, very good. The menu changes often – whatever’s freshest or most inspiring that week – but expect Mediterranean simplicity with a Bajan soul. Think grilled catch of the day, burrata with local tomatoes, or a punchy tuna tartare. The drinks are just as considered: crisp rosé, expertly made rum cocktails, and cold local beer – anyone for a Banks? It’s lunch with your feet in the sand, salt in your hair, and a cocktail in hand – what more could one want?
There’s a certain kind of magic that happens when everything is just relaxed enough. The staff are welcoming and warm without a trace of pretense, and you get the sense they genuinely want you to have a good time. No rush, no rules – just attentive service and a picture postcard sea view.
Though it’s been around for a good few years now, La Cabane still feels like a bit of a secret – particularly among first-timers to Barbados. Many of our guests return year after year and count lunch here as an essential part of the holiday. And for good reason. It’s not the cheapest lunch you’ll have on the island, but it might well be the most memorable.
And if lunch rolls into late afternoon (which it often does), don’t be surprised if things pick up a little. There’s a growing evening crowd and an unmistakable energy as the sun dips lower and the music gets just a touch louder. Whether you’re here for a quiet midday escape or a sundown gathering, La Cabane delivers every time.
In short, we've found the essence of what we all come to Barbados for – warm hospitality, stunning surroundings, and the chance to truly switch off. A little slice of beachside bliss, and one we wholeheartedly recommend.
