Bikini Beach Bar: Far Better Than the Name Suggests

Bikini Beach Bar: Far Better Than the Name Suggests

Whilst its name might conjure images of an influencer-packed beach club in Marbella, our recent visit to Bikini Beach Bar in Fitts Village, on the west coast of Barbados, revealed something far more appealing: a laid-back beachfront bar and restaurant with a welcoming atmosphere, excellent food and some of the friendliest service on the island.

It sits just south of Holetown and north of Paynes Bay, in the parish of St. James, and the first thing in its favour is how easy it is to get to. Because it's on a public beach, with no membership and no day pass needed, anyone can wander in which is not something you can say of the members-only estate clubs like the Royal Westmoreland Beach Club at Mullins. Park directly across the road and you're on the sand in two minutes. For guests staying in our nearby villas (Nirvana and Milord Sunsets are both a short stroll along the same beachfront), it's an easy walk for lunch, sunset drinks or a full beach day.

The setting has a rustic, barefoot charm to it. Soft sand, clear turquoise water, chilled music playing low in the background, and a choice between dining up on the shaded terrace or with your feet in the sand. It's easy to stay put: two loungers and an umbrella were BBD$40 at the time of our visit, fully redeemable against your food and drinks, which kept us there from late morning right through the afternoon.

The food is genuinely the reason to come, name aside. There's a beach bites menu of staple favourites and a dedicated kids' menu, so families are well looked after. The club sandwich was so good we came back for it twice during the trip: the kind of simple thing a kitchen either gets right or doesn't. The shrimp and lobster tacos were good, and the burger, which arrived on a branded Bikini Beach Bar & Grill slate board with a pile of fries, was worth ordering too.

On the drinks front, the mango margarita we ordered was a real highlight: sweet, sharp and well made, and one we'd happily order again. The bar also runs a daily happy hour from 5pm to 6pm with two-for-one on Mount Gay rum and select house drinks, which is a pleasant way to ease into the evening. On the Saturday we visited there was an all-day two-for-one margarita offer running too, though we'd check what's on when you go.

There's more to do here than eat and drink, which is what tips it from a lunch stop into a proper day out. The bar hires out clear-bottom kayaks, snorkelling gear and a Hobie Cat for poking along the coastline, and weather permitting there's a trampoline anchored out at sea, a hit with every age. If you want to be more active on the water, it pairs nicely with a morning out on the water with Charlie over on Alleynes Beach.

What sets the place apart, though, is the people. The team are warm, friendly and attentive, and Jayden in particular looked after us brilliantly: the kind of unhurried welcome that makes you want to come straight back. Which is exactly what we did, twice, for that club sandwich.

Whether you are after a relaxed family beach day or a long afternoon by the sea with friends, Bikini Beach Bar is one to put on your list. If you're after another barefoot, no-fuss beach bar in the same spirit, La Cabane at Batts Rock is well worth a look, and for something busier and more of a scene there's Sea Shed at Mullins. And if a beachfront base nearby appeals, our beachfront villas in St. James put you within strolling distance of the sand. You can see more of our beachfront villas across the west coast too, and for a wider guide to Barbados beach clubs, including private estate access and more casual beach-day options, read our Barbados Beach Clubs Guide.

Please note: the BBD$40 loungers, the 5pm–6pm happy hour and the Saturday all-day margarita offer were correct at the time of our visit and may have changed. Please confirm directly with the venue before booking.
